YAKIMA, Wash. The Washington Farm Labor Association says a backlog of visa applications could leave the state without enough guest workers for the apple harvest. Association Director Dan Fazio says farmers in the Northwest are seeking about 1,500 new worker visas for the apple and pear harvests. They will join about 7,000 guest workers already in the state. The Yakima Herald-Republic reports the apple harvest started this week in the Yakima Valley for some early varieties.
