Introductory statement from 1st Legislative District Rep. Derek Stanford

Democratic 1st Legislative District Rep. Derek Stanford will be unopposed on the Aug. 5 primary ballot.

Stanford also will be unopposed on the Nov. 4 general-election ballot unless someone registers as a write-in candidate by July 18 and finishes second in the primary with at least 1 percent of the primary vote. One possible write-in candidate has expressed an interest in running, but, as of Monday, no one had registered as a write-in candidate.

Stanford is seeking a third two-year term in the State House of Representatives.

The 1st Legislative District includes most of Mountlake Terrace, all of Brier and Bothell, unincorporated areas of Snohomish County north and east of Bothell, north Kirkland and unincorporated areas of King County between Bothell and Kirkland.

Here is his introductory campaign statement:

1st DISTRICT LEGISLATIVE REPRESENTATIVE Pos. 1

Derek Stanford (Prefers Democratic Party)

By working together, we can improve schools, make communities safer, and promote living wage jobs. Let’s keep focus on education to create opportunities for our children and to keep our economy growing.

As the only statistician in the legislature, I work with other legislators to ensure policies are based on science and decisions are based on facts. I’ve worked for new investments in schools and colleges, including the science building at UW Bothell. I’m proud of my work to make our budget more sustainable. I’ll continue to reject divisive politics, staying focused on issues that affect our families.
