Lake Stevens' Kelliher drafted by Athletics

Lake Stevens senior pitcher and Oregon commit Branden Kelliher was drafted by the Oakland Athletics in the eighth round (pick 252) on Friday afternoon.

Kelliher, who went 5-1 this past season to lead Lake Stevens to a league title, was projected to go between the second and fifth rounds. Going into the draft, a few teams, including Oakland and the Seattle Mariners, had shown increased interest in the 5-foot-11 pitcher.

Kelliher was considered the No. 1 ranked high school baseball prospect in Washington by Perfect Game — which also has him ranked as the 39th right-handed pitcher in the nation.

Kelliher has until July 15 to decide whether or not he wants to sign a contract with Oakland or go to Oregon.
