BEAVERTON, Ore. -- Despite being at a disadvantage height-wise, the Lynnwood girls basketball team utilized a balanced scoring attack and speed to get past the Beaverton Beavers on Thursday night.
Six Royals scored at least seven points to help Lynnwood to a 61-38 win at the Nike Northwest Invitational.
Mikayla Pivec led Lynnwood with 13 points and nine rebounds, Kelsey Rogers added 12 points and six rebounds and Monty Cooper added 11 points.
Rogers did most of her damage early, scoring eight of her 12 in the first period, to get Lynnwood off to a good start.
"She really got us going in the first," Lynnwood head coach Everett Edwards said. "She was a dominant presence inside . . . and they were a very big team, a lot bigger than us."
After taking a six-point lead into halftime, the Royals outscored the Beavers 33-16 the rest of the way to win comfortably. Edwards credited the strong second half to a tighter defense and better shooting.
"We picked up the pressure and caused some turnovers which created fast break opportunities," Edwards said. The Royals also made all four of their 3-pointers in the second half, with Jasmin Edwards, Grace Douglas, Jordyn Edwards and Cooper each hitting one.
After building the big lead, Lynnwood fended off Beaverton thanks in part to the game being held in Oregon.
"There's no shot clock in Oregon," Edwards said. "Once we got the lead, we milked the clock."
The Royals advance to play the winner of the South Salem-Clackamas game today at 8:45 p.m.
