EVERETT -- Good defense and a pair of clutch goalkeepers helped Archbishop Murphy get over an early season hurdle as the Wildcats defeated King's in a battle between top Cascade Conference teams.
"This game was a huge game," said Archbishop Murphy head coach Mike Bartley.
"We have two really top-notch keepers that make it easy for me," Bartley said of goalkeepers Crissy Talley and Natalie Robinson, who combined for four saves in the shutout.
Bartley also touted his "back six."
"(The defense) played really well," Bartley said. "Claire Feeney was awesome tonight in holding the midfield role. ... I think defense is where it's at. We play good defense and we counter well."
But The Wildcats needed at least one goal to continue in their pursuit of another perfect regular season.
"We knew this was going to be one of the top games of the early season," Bartley said. "King's played well. We just capitalized on our opportunities."
The first of those opportunities came midway through the first half. Cali Crisler took possession in the middle of the field about 30 yards out. She broke by a defender and hammered the ball into the far upper corner of the goal.
Camilla Holeman got the Wildcats some insurance later in the half when she caught King's goalkeeper Madeline Nielson in transition. She chipped the ball over Nielson's head and in from about 30 yards to make it 2-0.
