Monroe and Snohomish have been selected to receive $445,000 of $3.4 million in federal funds recommended for five transportation projects coming up in the next year.
The two projects are valuable to the two Snohomish County cities, which are in need of wider lanes and a roundabout.
The money is being allocated by the Puget Sound Regional Council, a planning agency through which federal transportation grants are distributed.
The agency has recommended $199,000 go toward widening 30th Street in Snohomish. This project includes widening 56th Street as well to create new lanes, improve traffic flow and offer better space for pedestrians and bicycles. The council is also recommending that $246,000 be spent on the design of a roundabout at Monroe's Main Street Gateway.
The PSRC is seeking public opinion on the projects through Aug. 9. The final decisions on projects and funding will be made in September by the group's executive board. Five more projects are in line if additional funds become available. One of these projects includes a Sultan Basin sidewalk that needs to be designed and constructed, with an estimated price tag of $289,000.
These projects are a part of the PSRC's Rural Town Centers and Corridors Program.
To comment on a project, send a written response to Puget Sound Regional Council, Attention: Jeff Storrar, 1011 Western Avenue, Suite 500. Seattle, WA 98104 or email
