EDMONDS -- With the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh inning, Edmonds-Woodway had the game-winning run at the plate. But Kamiak relief pitcher Kevaughn Escobar-Umayam pitched out of the jam, retiring the final three batters with a strikeout, a pop-out and a groundout as the Knights escaped to defeat the Warriors 5-2 in a Wesco 4A South game on Friday.
Edmonds-Woodway came into the game tied with Cascade atop the 4A South standings. But in their third meeting with Kamiak the Warriors suffered their first league loss of the season.
"You have to play good defense and you have to put up some runs against them," said Kamiak head coach Steve Merkley of E-W. "We lost by one the last couple times we've played. It's seems that whenever we play these guys it comes down to one inning."
Knights starting pitcher Andy Crosby threw into the seventh inning and helped his cause with three hits and two RBI.
"Andy had reconstructive surgery on his left shoulder," Merkley said. "This was the first day that he could follow through ... He was throwing his curveball for strikes and it was the first time that his fastball was effective this season. He looked really good today."
