Reporting reality is paper's purpose

SHARE: facebook Twitter icon Linkedin icon Google+ icon Email icon |  PRINTER-FRIENDLY
Recently the Herald was chastised by a letter, "Give up crime for positive coverage," to stop the bleeding and quit reporting violence, and urged to "print just the positive, uplifting news and events" and to "chill the evil."
I wonder who this writer thinks is better suited to inform the public of what is actually going on in this world other than our newspaper or rather if it just isn't important?
Is it not the purpose of the media to inform us of the "news" ... be it positive or negative?
Too many think all that is needed is to think positive and all will be fine. Said another way, too many chose to ignore the realities of our world and the evil that does in fact exist. While hiding from these realities they also chose to complain about and condemn our government for the way it conducts itself while trying to protect its citizens.
I support a positive outlook on all things and it pains me greatly to read about the violence but it is foolish to ignore evil and pretend it doesn't exist.
