PRINCE GEORGE, B.C. -- The Everett Silvertips had a chance to put themselves one step closer to securing a playoff spot Saturday night.
Instead, the Tips put up little resistance as they fell 4-0 to the Prince George Cougars.
Everett was looking to put themselves 13 points ahead of Prince George, which currently would be the first team out of the playoffs, in the WHL's Western Conference standings. But with the loss, the Tips' lead shrank to nine.
Colin Jacobs scored twice for Prince George (15-28-2-4), which snapped a three-game losing streak and also gave new head coach Mark Holick his first victory in charge. Jake Mykitiuk and Zach Pochiro also scored for the Cougars, while Mac Engel stopped all 21 shots he faced to earn his first shutout of the season.
Goaltender Austin Lotz, who carried the Tips to three of a possible four points on the first two games of the road trip, couldn't drag Everett to a result Saturday. He finished with 35 saves as the Tips (21-27-1-2) once again were severely outshot, this time 39-21.
After an uneventful first period, Prince George began taking control in the second, outshooting Everett 14-6 and scoring twice to take a 2-0 lead.
The Cougars struck first on the power play at 3 minutes, 15 seconds. Troy Bourke's shot deflected off a skate in front, and Jacobs put home the rebound to give Prince George a 1-0 lead.
Everett had a golden opportunity to tie it when Dawson Leedahl had a shorthanded breakaway. But although Leedahl had Engel beat, he put his shot off the post. Then the Cougars made it 2-0 at 15:53. The puck came to Rinalds Rosinski as he was exiting the penalty box, and he played Mykitiuk in free. Mykitiuk put a shot into the top corner to increase the lead to two.
Jacobs ended any thoughts of an Everett comeback by scoring his second of the game 1:23 into the third period. Rosinskis flipped the puck toward the net, and Jacobs tipped it out of the air and past Lotz to make it 3-0. Pochiro added the final insult by scoring a power-play goal with less than six seconds remaining.
