SNOHOMISH -- The Snohomish seniors shone on senior night. Morgan Green and Paige Helms both contributed to a Panther victory in what turned out to be a low scoring defensive battle. Green's offense and leadership, combined with Helms' rebounding and defense -- including a blocked shot with three seconds left -- led Snohomish to a 31-29 Wesco 4A North win over Monroe.
The game was tied at halftime, but a big third quarter by the Panthers put them far enough ahead that they were able to hang on. Snohomish outscored Monroe 10-4 in the third, as well as shooting 6-for-9 from the free throw line to the Bearcats' 2-for-9.
Monroe tried to close what might normally be a small gap in the fourth quarter, but the Snohomish defense made the lead enough.
They held Monroe to 12 in the final frame. "We didn't score on our end either, but we were able to hold on for a win," said Snohomish head coach Ken Roberts.
That had a lot to do with Green and Helms. Roberts described Green's play as "steady" and said she "did a good job of leading our team.
He also praised Helms' nine rebounds and her block as time expired. "It was a lay in opportunity. Paige came from behind and blocked the shot. We got the rebound and that ended the game."
Credit also has to go to Madeline Smith whose seven points came entirely from going 7-for-8 from the line in the second half.
"These are two good defensive teams," said Roberts. "They've been really consistent on defense all year. We played great defense most of the year but slipped up the last four or five games. But we put in a good defensive effort tonight."
