NRA responsible for fanning fear

In the Jan. 14 letter, "Real agenda isn't to confiscate guns," asks where the notion came from that any gun control will lead to confiscation of all guns. The answer is the NRA. The NRA says that any form of gun control will escalate until all guns are confiscated.
The NRA, with only 4 million members, is the most powerful political group in the U.S. In most congressional districts, the NRA controls the vote of between 2 percent and 7 percent of the electorate, which is enough to swing the election. The NRA contacts all candidates and says "If you don't support our agenda, we'll instruct our members to vote against you." Therefore almost all candidates support the NRA agenda.
Any rational person who understands English, and has no preconceived notion about what the Second Amendment means would conclude that it mandates that citizens have the right to own weapons for the purpose of serving in the militia.
It's reasonable that citizens have the legal right to own guns for legitimate purposes, such as hunting and self-protection in remote areas, but these are not constitutional rights.
Statistics show that in developed nations the death rate from guns is directly proportional to gun ownership rate. In Canada and Australia, the gun ownership rate and the death rate by guns is much lower than here.
Several children die every day by guns in the U.S. If the Newtown tragedy results in meaningful gun control, the lives of the 20 children will be a small price to pay for the thousands of lives that will be saved in the future. I'm not counting on it; because you can be assured that the NRA will continue to fight against any kind of gun control.
