MOUNTLAKE TERRACE -- A meeting is planned later this month to discuss improvements -- and what people would like to see done -- at Firefighters Memorial Park.
The meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. Sept. 27 in the Jungle Room at the Recreation Pavilion, 5303 228th Street SW.
Firefighters Memorial Park, located behind former Fire Station 18 on less than a half-acre in the eastern portion of the city at 3900 228th St. SW.
After Fire Station 18 was relocated, the park area was expanded, the parking lot reconfigured and a new fence installed along the front of the park, according to the city. The park has been closed during renovation and is scheduled to reopen in October.
Plans include relocating the playground equipment to the front of the park, establishing pathways and installing a new flagpole near the memorial area.
According to the city's website, Firefighters Memorial Park was originally named "Larry Egbert Park" after a Mountlake Terrace firefighter who was killed in a car accident in the early 1970s.
The park's name was changed in the mid 1980s to honor all firefighters after a request from the Mountlake Terrace Fire Department with the blessing of the Egbert family.
