LONGVIEW -- Salt water is returning to more than 600 acres -- nearly a square mile -- of land at the Willapa National Wildlife Refuge near Long Beach.
The Fish and Wildlife Service breached a dike at Willapa Bay last week to improve habitat for fish and shorebirds. Dikes have been in place for about 60 years.
Refuge manager Jackie Ferrier told The Daily News it will take about five years for tides to re-create the saltwater marsh.
