This year's student-originated theme for the annual national meeting was "#realitycheck." Throughout the five-day convention, participants examined and discussed family, school and community violence prevention, physical and financial fitness, future career exploration, and community service projects.
More than 6,800 people participated in the conference.

Granite Falls School District employee retires
A retirement reception for John Maik, a Granite Falls School District employee, is planned for Wednesday.
Maik has been employed with the district for 25 years handling maintenance and facility needs. The event from 2 to 4 p.m. will be at the district's Administration Center, 205 N. Alder Ave., Granite Falls.
A graduate of Granite Falls High School, Maik has seen many changes in his years as an employee. He helped build three new schools including Mountain Way Elementary, Monte Cristo Elementary and Granite Falls High School.
"It's John's overall knowledge of the district that has been so valuable over the years; it's that knowledge that has led to the smooth operations of our schools," said Mike Sullivan, director of business and operations.
