LONGVIEW -- The Everett Trojans thought they had tied the game. Instead, they suffered a dramatic defeat.
Everett's Keone Kela was robbed of a game-tying home run in the bottom of the ninth inning Friday as Everett lost to Lower Columbia 4-2 in the opening round of the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges baseball tournament.
With two out, his team down by two runs and a man on base, Kela lined a ball that was headed over the fence in left field. But Lower Columbia's left fielder, Derrick Salberg, jumped in the air, made the catch and fell over the 3-foot fence into the bullpen.
Salberg climbed back onto the field with the ball in his glove for the game's final out.
The loss dropped Everett into a loser-out game against Columbia Basin. The game originally was scheduled for Friday night, but after an extended rain delay the contest was postponed until 9:30 a.m. today.
Alex Shaffer is scheduled to start on the mound for the Trojans.
