    Mukilteo in Snohomish County, Wash.

This is one of a series of looks at Snohomish and Island county communities based on data from the U.S. Census of 2010. Though the word Mukilteo is widely believed to mean "good camping site," the authoritative site says that in the Snohomish dialect "muk-wil-teo" means "narrow passage," a reference to the sand spit that formed the original Mukilteo landing. Mukilteo was officially incorporated in 1947, but the location has a historic role in the development of Puget Sound. It was at Mukilteo that the Point Elliott Treaty was signed by territorial Gov. Isaac Stevens and the chiefs of 22 tribes in 1855. Mukilteo is has a ferry terminal for service to Clinton on Whidbey Island. The east side of the city adjoins Paine Field, site of the Future of Flight Aviation Center and Boeing Tour. In 2011, Mukilteo was ranked ninth by Money magazine in a list of the best small towns in which to live.
