COUPEVILLE -- A Langley woman was sentenced Friday to more than 5 1/2 years in prison for a November crash that took the lives of three young men.
Kaylea F. Souza, 18, pleaded guilty earlier this month to vehicular homicide. She admitted she was behind the wheel of a 2003 Chevy Malibu that veered off a Langley-area road, struck a tree and caught fire. Killed were three passengers: Marcel "Mick" Poynter, 20; Robert Knight, 22; and Charles Porter, 19.
Souza told troopers that she'd drank a 40-ounce bottle of malt liquor earlier the evening of the crash.
As part of the plea agreement, prosecutors recommended a 4 1/2-year prison term. An Island County Superior Court judge Friday went beyond the recommendation. He sentenced Souza to the maximum allowed by the law.
