EVERETT -- A fire at the Broadway Auto Sales building in Everett on Friday morning may have been intentionally set to disguise a burglary, police said.
The blaze is being investigated as an arson, Everett police Sgt. Robert Goetz said.
The fire was reported about 7:45 a.m. at the building in the 1600 block of Broadway.
One of the building's doors apparently was kicked in before fire crews arrived. Inside, there were indications somebody had tried to make off with the safe, without success.
The building also was spray-painted with messages that were anti-police and contained a racial slur. It was unknown if the messages were somehow connected to the fire. The owner told police the graffiti appeared to be fresh.
No injuries were reported in the fire. The building was heavily damaged, fire officials said.
Police have no immediate suspects. People with information are encouraged to call the Everett Police Department tip line at 425-257–8450.
