STARTUP -- Firefighters rescued three people on Christmas Day from a fire at an old church building in the Startup area.
Someone called 911 just before 3 a.m. to report smoke and a red glow, said Merlin Halverson, fire chief at Snohomish County Fire District 5 in Sultan.
Fire crews found flames shooting from the roof, and the steeple collapsed moments later, he said. Three people were sleeping inside a lower-level of the building and were awakened by crews.
The building dates back about 100 years and was most recently being used as a residence and business, Halverson said. It is in or near the 36400 block of U.S. 2. Traffic along the highway in the area was tangled for some time.
No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
Crews from Gold Bar and Monroe also responded.
